Healing Services and Livelihoods for Homeless and Orphaned Youth in Galmudug (Dhusamareb, Galkaio, Adado and Guricel) in Mid 2023
Pathways to Hope is a holistic initiative aimed at 100 youth including girls for supporting homeless and orphaned children in Galmudug, Somalia. The program combined psychosocial support with hands-on vocational training to help children heal from trauma and build a path toward self-sufficiency. It is built on the belief that with care, guidance, and opportunity, every child can rise above adversity.
Objectives:
Emotional Healing and Wellbeing
Provided trauma-informed counseling and safe spaces for play, expression, and rest.
Facilitated group therapy, art therapy, storytelling, and cultural games to nurture emotional recovery.
Basic Education and Life Skills
Offered basic literacy, numeracy, and health education.
Conducted workshops on hygiene, conflict resolution, goal-setting, and teamwork.
Vocational Skills and Microenterprise
Trained youth in simple, small-scale trades tailored to local needs and market demand. Focused areas include:
- Shoe shining and repair (mobile kits and stands provided)
- Street tea selling (hygienic, low-cost setup with locally sourced tea)
- Small grocer/juices tables (fruits, snacks, and household items)
- Plastic collection and recycling initiatives
- Basic tailoring or mending clothes (for older participants)
- Small Transport vehicles for each 3-male individuals to a part of the youth (older ones)
Mentorship and Community Reintegration
Paired youth with trusted community mentors (elders, shopkeepers, teachers)
Collaborated with local mosques and civil society for support and monitoring
Facilitated reunification with extended family when possible
